About Us

The campaign for a National Disability Insurance Scheme is supported across Australia by an unprecedented, politically bi-partisan and rapidly growing coalition of people with disabilities, carers, disability service providers, peak disability bodies and community and welfare organisations.

The Australian disability and community sector, including many of the largest and oldest organisations, have publicly endorsed the proposal for an NDIS, the principles of which were first outlined in a submission presented to, and endorsed by, the 2020 Summit in April 2008. In its response to the Summit, the Australian Government agreed to give further consideration to the idea.

Following the Summit, three organisations - Yooralla, Disability Services Australia and the Spastic Centre - then developed a detailed submission for the Australian Government's National Disability Strategy. This submission proposes that an NDIS should be the centrepiece of the new National Disability Strategy, which is due to be unveiled in early 2010.

In April 2009, the federal Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities, Bill Shorten, described an NDIS as "a simple yet visionary and exciting idea".

The Australian Federation of Disability Organisations (AFDO), Carers Australia and National Disability Services (NDS), which have come together to form the National Disability and Carers Alliance, announced in June 2009 that their top priority would be to advocate for an NDIS.

The campaign is growing, and your support is vital. Find out how you can Take Action or add your organisation's name to the list of Supporters.
